About the JSON Formatter

Format, beautify and indent JSON so it is easy to read and debug. Paste minified or messy JSON and get a clean, validated result.

How to use the JSON Formatter

  1. Paste your JSON, or press Load Sample JSON to try it.
  2. Choose the Indentation Level: 2 Spaces, 4 Spaces or Tabs.
  3. Press Format & Beautify JSON. Use Copy JSON or Download .json to keep the result.

Worked example

The input {"name":"Ada","langs":["en","fr"]} becomes an indented structure with each key on its own line.

When to use the JSON Formatter

  • Making API responses readable while you debug.
  • Preparing JSON for documentation or code review.
  • Spotting missing brackets and commas in configuration files.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trailing commas, single quotes and unquoted keys, all of which are invalid in JSON.
  • Pasting a JavaScript object and expecting it to be valid JSON.
  • Including comments, which JSON does not allow.

Tips

  • If formatting fails, the JSON has a syntax error such as a trailing comma, single quotes or an unquoted key.
  • Do not paste secrets such as API keys into shared or public tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is JSON?
JavaScript Object Notation, a lightweight text format for structured data used by most web APIs.
What is the difference between formatting and validating?
Formatting changes the layout. Validating checks that the JSON is correct. This tool does both: invalid JSON gives an error.
How do I fix "Unexpected token"?
Look at the position mentioned in the error. It is usually a missing quote, a comma in the wrong place or an unclosed bracket.
