Formula and method
All conversions go through metres: result = value × (factor of the from-unit ÷ factor of the to-unit).

Worked example
A 6 ft 2 in person is 74 inches × 2.54 = 187.96 cm. A 10 km run is 10 × 0.621371 = 6.21 miles.
