About the Triangle Area calculator
Find the area of a triangle from its base and height.
How to use the Triangle Area calculator
- Enter the Lateral Base Span (b) and the Orthogonal Height (h).
- Press Calculate Triangle Area.
Formula and method
A = ½ × b × h. A triangle always takes up exactly half of the rectangle around it.
Worked example
A triangle with base 12 and height 10 has an area of 60 square units.
Tips
- The height must be measured at a right angle to the base.
- If you know all three sides, use Heron's formula in the Triangle Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the area half of base times height?
Two identical triangles fit together to make a parallelogram or rectangle of base Ă— height.
