Volume Calculator
Find the volume of cubes, boxes, spheres, cylinders and cones, with a 3D sketch of the shape.
About the Volume Calculator
Find the volume of cubes, boxes, spheres, cylinders and cones, with a 3D sketch of the shape.
How to use the Volume Calculator
- Pick a shape: Cube, Rect Box, Sphere, Cylinder or Cone.
- Enter the dimensions shown.
- Press Calculate volume to see the volume.
Formula and method
Cube: s³ · Box: l × w × h · Sphere: (4/3)πr³ · Cylinder: πr²h · Cone: (1/3)πr²h
Worked example
A sphere with radius 3: (4/3) × π × 27 = 113.10 cubic units.
A cylinder. With a radius of 2 and a height of 5, volume = π × 2² × 5 ≈ 62.83 cubic units.
When to use the Volume Calculator
- Working out how much liquid a tank, pool or container holds.
- Estimating soil, sand or concrete needed for a project.
- Solving geometry problems on 3D shapes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the diameter in a formula that needs the radius.
- Mixing units, then getting an answer in the wrong scale.
Tips
- Volume is in cubic units, and 1 litre equals 1,000 cm³.
- A cone holds exactly one third of a cylinder with the same base and height.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the volume of a tank?
Use the cylinder formula for a round tank or the box formula for a rectangular one, then convert the units to litres or gallons.
How many litres are in a cubic metre?
1,000 litres.
How do I convert cubic feet to gallons?
Multiply cubic feet by about 7.48 to get US gallons.
