About the Force Calculator

Newton's second law links force, mass and acceleration. Enter any two to find the third.

How to use the Force Calculator

  1. Enter two of Mass (m), Acceleration (a) and Force (F).
  2. Press the matching button, such as Find Force (F), or Calculate.

Formula and method

F = m × a, so m = F ÷ a and a = F ÷ m. Force is in newtons (N).

Worked example

A 10 kg mass accelerating at 9.8 m/s² needs 98 N of force.

Tips

  • Use kilograms and metres per second squared.
  • This calculates the net force. Friction and other forces must be included.

Frequently asked questions
