Momentum Calculator

p = m × v · Mass · Velocity

p = m × v  |  Momentum in kg·m/s

About the Momentum calculator

Momentum is mass in motion. Enter any two of momentum, mass and velocity to find the third.

How to use the Momentum calculator

  1. Choose what to solve for under Solve For: p, m or v.
  2. Enter the Mass (kg) and Velocity (m/s) (or momentum).
  3. Press Calculate.

Formula and method

p = m × v, measured in kg·m/s. In a closed system total momentum is conserved.

Worked example

A 1,000 kg car travelling at 20 m/s has 20,000 kg·m/s of momentum.

Tips

  • Momentum has direction, so opposite directions have opposite signs.
  • Impulse (force × time) equals the change in momentum.

Frequently asked questions

What is conservation of momentum?
In a collision with no outside forces, the total momentum before equals the total momentum after.
