Formula and method

Volume = length × width × depth. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft bed covered 3 inches deep needs about 1.85 cubic yards.

Tips

  • A depth of 2 to 3 inches suppresses weeds without smothering plants.
  • Keep mulch a little away from tree trunks.
