Reaction Rate calculator

The average rate of a chemical reaction is how quickly the concentration of a substance changes with time.

How it works Report a problem

Reaction Rate

Rate = Δc / Δt · Concentration Change · Time

Rate = Δc / Δt  |  Reaction Rate in mol/(L·s)

About the Reaction Rate calculator

The average rate of a chemical reaction is how quickly the concentration of a substance changes with time.

How to use the Reaction Rate calculator

  1. Enter the change in concentration Δc (mol/L) and the time interval Δt (seconds).
  2. Press Calculate.

Formula and method

Rate = Δc ÷ Δt, in mol/(L·s). Use the absolute value so the rate is positive.

Worked example

A concentration that changes by 0.5 mol/L in 100 s has an average rate of 0.005 mol/(L·s).

Tips

  • Reaction rates usually rise with temperature, concentration and a catalyst.
  • Instantaneous rates come from the slope of a concentration-time graph.

Frequently asked questions

How does temperature affect reaction rate?
Higher temperature means faster-moving particles and more collisions with enough energy, so the rate rises.
