About the Scientific Notation Calculator
Convert very large or very small numbers to scientific notation and back, so they are easy to read and compare.
How to use the Scientific Notation Calculator
- Enter your value in Input Decimal Value.
- Press Convert to see it in scientific notation.
Formula and method
A number is written as a × 10ⁿ where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is a whole number. Moving the decimal point left makes n positive; moving it right makes n negative.
Worked example
0.000000001 = 1 × 10⁻⁹. 123,000 = 1.23 × 10⁵.
Two directions. 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴, and 0.00032 = 3.2 × 10⁻⁴.
When to use the Scientific Notation Calculator
- Writing very large or very small numbers in a compact form.
- Multiplying and dividing numbers in physics and chemistry.
- Checking how many significant figures a result should have.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Moving the decimal point in the wrong direction when the number is less than 1.
- Leaving the coefficient outside the range 1 to 10.
Tips
- Scientific notation is often shown as 1.23E5 on calculators.
- When multiplying, multiply the coefficients and add the exponents.
Frequently asked questions
Why use scientific notation?
It avoids long strings of zeros and shows the size of a number at a glance, which is useful in science and engineering.
What is the E notation on calculators?
A way of writing scientific notation. 4.5E4 means 4.5 × 10⁴.
How do I multiply numbers in scientific notation?
Multiply the coefficients and add the exponents.
