About the Unit Converter
Convert between the most common units of length, weight and volume in one place. Pick a category, type a value, choose the units and get an instant answer, with the option to copy the results.
How to use the Unit Converter
- Choose a category at the top: Length, Weight or Volume.
- Enter the Value and select the Unit you are converting from.
- Press Convert to see the value in the other units, then use Copy Results if you need to paste them elsewhere.
Formula and method
Every conversion multiplies by a fixed factor. The converter first converts your value to a base unit (metres, kilograms or litres) and then to the unit you want.
| From | To | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| inches | centimetres | 2.54 |
| miles | kilometres | 1.609344 |
| pounds | kilograms | 0.453592 |
| US gallons | litres | 3.78541 |
Worked example
5 miles Ă— 1.609344 = 8.05 km. 150 lb Ă— 0.453592 = 68.04 kg.
When to use the Unit Converter
- Converting recipe amounts between metric and imperial units.
- Checking measurements on product specs, shipping labels and manuals.
- Solving physics and chemistry problems that mix different unit systems.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing US and UK units. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres, and a UK gallon is about 4.546 litres.
- Converting a squared or cubed unit with the plain length factor. 1 m² is 10,000 cm², not 100.
- Rounding too early in a multi-step calculation.
Tips
- US and imperial gallons, pints and fluid ounces are different sizes. Check which one you need.
- Round only at the end of a calculation to avoid accumulating errors.
