Average Velocity
36.0 km/h
IN MPH
22.4
MACH NUMBER
0.029
This velocity is equivalent to an Olympic Sprinter's top speed.

Velocity is distance's rate with a direction attached: how fast something moves and where it is heading. This calculator solves the distance-time-velocity triangle in any direction, for journeys, projectiles and moving machinery.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter any two of: distance (displacement), time, velocity.
  • Press calculate to see the third value.

Average over a journey, instant at a moment

A trip's average velocity hides every stop and sprint inside it; the instantaneous velocity is what a speedometer shows right now. Round trips make the distinction vivid: average speed can be healthy while average velocity, home being the start, is exactly zero.

Frequently asked questions

What is the velocity formula?
v = d/t: velocity = displacement divided by time. Rearranged: distance = velocity × time; time = distance / velocity.
What is the difference between speed and velocity?
Speed is a size (scalar); velocity is size plus direction (vector). Driving in a circle at constant speed means constantly changing velocity.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. So 90 km/h is 25 m/s. Multiply m/s by 3.6 to go the other way.
