About the Work Calculator

Work is done when a force moves an object. Calculate work, force or distance, including the angle between the force and the movement.

How to use the Work Calculator

  1. Enter two of Force (F), Distance (d) and Work Done (W) and the Angle θ (0 means parallel).
  2. Press the matching Find button or Calculate.

Formula and method

W = F × d × cos θ

Worked example

A 100 N force moving an object 10 m in the same direction does 1,000 J of work.

Tips

  • Work is measured in joules.
  • Carrying a bag at constant height does no work against gravity because the force and movement are at 90°.

Frequently asked questions

When is work zero?
When there is no movement, or when the force is perpendicular to the movement.
