About the Dilution calculator

Work out how much stock solution and solvent you need to make a more dilute solution.

How to use the Dilution calculator

  1. Enter the Initial concentration (C1) and its Units.
  2. Enter the Final concentration (C2) and Final volume, or a Dilution factor.
  3. Press Calculate.

Formula and method

C₁ × V₁ = C₂ × V₂, so V₁ = C₂ × V₂ ÷ C₁. The solvent to add is V₂ − V₁.

Worked example

To make 500 mL of 2 M solution from a 10 M stock, take V₁ = 2 × 500 ÷ 10 = 100 mL of stock and add 400 mL of solvent.

Tips

  • Add acid to water, never water to acid.
  • Use the same units for both concentrations.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dilution factor?
The ratio of final volume to stock volume. A 1:10 dilution has a factor of 10.
