About the Solution calculator
Find the concentration of a solution from the mass of solute, its molecular weight and the volume of solvent.
How to use the Solution calculator
- Enter the Solute mass, Molecular weight and Solvent volume with its unit.
- Choose the Target output: molarity, molality or normality (with an Equivalents factor for normality).
- Press Calculate.
Formula and method
Molarity = (mass ÷ molecular weight) ÷ volume in litres.
Worked example
58.44 g of sodium chloride (molecular weight 58.44) in 1 L of solution is 1 M.
Tips
- Molarity uses the volume of the final solution. Molality uses the mass of the solvent in kilograms.
Frequently asked questions
What is normality?
Molarity multiplied by the number of reactive equivalents per mole.
