Sale Price & Savings Optimization

$

A "30% off" tag only helps if you know the number you will actually pay. This calculator takes the original price and the discount and returns the sale price and the amount saved, so offers can be compared in money instead of percentages.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the original price of the item.
  • Enter the discount as a percentage (or a fixed amount, if offered).
  • Press calculate to see the final price and your saving.

Comparing two offers honestly

A bigger percentage on a higher starting price can cost more than a smaller percentage on a lower one. And stacked discounts do not add: 20% off followed by 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%, because the second cut applies to the already-reduced price. Run both offers through the calculator and compare final prices.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount quickly by hand?
Multiply the price by the percentage as a decimal to get the saving, then subtract. Or multiply the price by (1 minus the decimal) to jump straight to the sale price.
What is the difference between discount and mark-up?
A discount reduces a price from its listed level; a mark-up raises a cost to reach a selling price. They are opposite directions on different bases.
Does the calculator include tax?
Tax is usually charged on the discounted price. Work out the sale price here first, then apply your local tax rate to that figure.
