Future value answers the saver's favourite question: if I leave this money growing at this rate, what will it be worth? This calculator projects a lump sum, regular contributions, or both, to the date you choose.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the amount you have now (the present value).
  • Add a regular contribution if you keep adding.
  • Enter the expected yearly return and the number of years.
  • Press calculate to see the future value and the growth part of it.

Contributions vs growth: watch the mix

Early on, most of the final amount is money you put in; later, growth takes over and adds more than you do. The crossover is the moment compounding starts working harder than you. Seeing that point in your own numbers is the best argument for starting now and not interrupting the plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is the future value formula?
For a lump sum: FV = PV × (1 + r)^t. Regular contributions add a series of smaller compounded amounts on top; the calculator combines both.
What return should I assume?
Use the realistic long-run return of your actual investment, after fees if you can. For planning, a cautious figure serves you better than the best year on record.
Does future value account for inflation?
Not automatically. To see the value in today's money, use a return reduced by expected inflation (for example 7% return minus 3% inflation) as the rate.
