GDP measures the total value an economy produces in a period. The most common classroom and exam route to it is the expenditure approach, adding up every category of spending. This calculator does that sum and can check the growth rate between two periods.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter consumption (C): household spending on goods and services.
  • Add investment (I), government spending (G), exports (X) and imports (M).
  • Press calculate: GDP = C + I + G + (X − M).

Imports subtract for a reason

Imports are not a penalty on the economy; they are subtracted because they are already counted inside C, I and G, and GDP should measure domestic production only. Net exports (X − M) can therefore be negative without meaning the economy shrank.

Frequently asked questions

What are the other ways to calculate GDP?
The income approach (adding all incomes earned) and the production or value-added approach (adding each industry's value added). In theory all three give the same total.
What is real vs nominal GDP?
Nominal GDP uses current prices; real GDP adjusts for inflation, so growth figures reflect actual output change rather than price rises.
How is the GDP growth rate calculated?
(GDP this period − GDP last period) divided by GDP last period, times 100. Use real GDP figures for a meaningful rate.
