About the JSON to CSV

Convert a JSON array of objects into CSV that opens in Excel or Google Sheets.

How to use the JSON to CSV

  1. Paste a JSON array, or press Sample Data.
  2. Press Convert to CSV.
  3. Use Copy CSV and paste it into a spreadsheet.

Worked example

[{"id":1,"name":"John"}] becomes a header row id,name followed by 1,John.

When to use the JSON to CSV

  • Opening API data in Excel or Google Sheets.
  • Creating a spreadsheet report from JSON records.
  • Importing JSON data into a tool that only accepts CSV.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to convert deeply nested JSON. CSV is flat, so nested objects need flattening first.
  • Records with different keys, which give a table with empty cells.

Tips

  • The JSON should be an array of objects with similar keys.
  • Deeply nested data may need to be flattened first.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some columns empty?
Objects that do not contain a key produce an empty cell for that column.
What JSON structure works best?
An array of objects that all have the same keys, such as [{"name":"Ann","age":30},{"name":"Bob","age":25}].
