About the JSON to YAML

Convert JSON into YAML, which is easier to read and popular in configuration files.

How to use the JSON to YAML

  1. Paste your JSON or click Sample.
  2. Choose the YAML Indent (2 or 4 spaces) and options such as Compact Arrays or Sort Keys.
  3. Press Convert to YAML and copy the result.

When to use the JSON to YAML

  • Converting an API response or a config from JSON into YAML for a Kubernetes, Docker Compose or CI file.
  • Making a configuration file easier for people to read and edit.
  • Moving settings between tools that expect different formats.
  • Learning how the two formats represent the same data.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pasting invalid JSON, such as a trailing comma or single quotes. Fix the JSON first.
  • Using tabs when editing YAML afterwards. YAML indentation must use spaces.
  • Forgetting that strings that look like numbers, booleans or dates can be interpreted differently in YAML. Quote them if needed.

Tips

  • YAML relies on indentation, so use spaces, never tabs.
  • Two spaces is the usual indentation for YAML.
  • Sort keys if you want a predictable order that is easy to compare in version control.

Frequently asked questions

Is YAML a superset of JSON?
Valid JSON is also valid YAML in most cases, but YAML has extra features such as comments.
Is JSON valid YAML?
In almost all cases yes, because YAML 1.2 is designed to be a superset of JSON, but YAML adds features such as comments.
Why is YAML popular for configuration?
It is easy to read, allows comments and needs fewer brackets and quotes than JSON.
Will comments be kept when I convert back?
No. JSON has no comments, so any YAML comments are lost when you convert to JSON.
