Return Intelligence

Knowing a portfolio grew is not the same as knowing its return, especially when money went in and out along the way. This calculator separates growth from contributions and gives the honest percentage — and the yearly rate it equals.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the portfolio's starting value.
  • Add the money you contributed (and subtract withdrawals).
  • Enter the ending value and the time period.
  • Press calculate to see the total return and the annualised rate.

Why annualised is the fair figure

A 30% return means very different things over one year and over five. Annualising puts every result into per-year terms, which is the only honest way to compare a portfolio against a savings rate, inflation or another fund.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate portfolio return simply?
(Ending value − starting value − contributions) divided by starting value, times 100. For precision with large mid-period flows, a money-weighted method such as IRR is better.
What is a good portfolio return?
One that beats inflation after costs and matches the risk taken. Beating a matching index or your own plan's assumed rate is the practical test.
Why does my app show a different return?
Apps may use time-weighted or money-weighted methods, or include dividends differently. With no money added or removed, all methods should agree.
