Profitability Intelligence

Profit percentage turns a money figure into a comparable rate: the same profit is excellent on a small sale and weak on a large one. This calculator gives the percentage from cost and selling price, or from revenue and profit directly.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the cost and the selling price (or revenue and profit).
  • Press calculate to see the profit and its percentage.

Which percentage base are you using?

Profit measured on cost is markup; profit measured on price is margin, and the same sale gives two different percentages. Reports, suppliers and partners may each use the other base, so name the base whenever a percentage is quoted, and convert with this calculator when a figure arrives unexplained.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate profit percentage on cost?
(Selling price − cost) divided by cost, times 100. This is the markup-style percentage.
How do I calculate profit percentage on price?
(Selling price − cost) divided by selling price, times 100. This is the margin-style percentage used in accounts.
What if the result is negative?
The sale lost money: costs exceeded the price. The percentage shows how far under water it is, relative to the base chosen.
