Monthly Budget Breakdown

Rent is usually the largest single payment in a budget, and the one with the least room to adjust later. This calculator works out what rent your income can carry using the widely used affordability guides, and converts between weekly, monthly and yearly figures without errors.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter your monthly (or yearly) income after tax.
  • Press calculate to see a sensible rent ceiling.
  • Or enter a rent amount to convert it between weekly, monthly and yearly.

The 30% guide, used wisely

Spending around 30% of take-home pay on rent is the common benchmark, but it is a starting point, not a law. In expensive cities it may be unreachable; with no car and low other costs, more can work. What matters is what remains for everything else, which the income figure here forces into view.

Frequently asked questions

Should the 30% be of gross or net income?
Net (take-home) is the safer base, because gross includes tax you never see. If a landlord or agent quotes gross-based figures, convert before agreeing.
Do bills count inside the rent figure?
For budgeting, yes: compare rent plus typical bills against the guide. A cheaper rent with expensive heating can cost more than a dearer all-in rent.
How do I convert weekly rent to monthly?
Weekly rent times 52, divided by 12. Simply multiplying by 4 understates it, a common and expensive mistake.
