Savings Growth Path

Savings grow from three things working together: what you start with, what you add each month, and the interest both earn. This calculator combines all three and shows the balance building year by year, so a savings habit becomes a visible trajectory.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter your starting balance.
  • Add what you will deposit each month.
  • Enter the interest rate and the number of years.
  • Press calculate to see the final balance, total deposited and total interest.

The deposit matters more than the rate hunt

Chasing a slightly better rate is satisfying but small; raising the monthly deposit usually beats it by a wide margin, and it is entirely under your control. When the projection disappoints, test a deposit increase here before shopping for a new account.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I save each month?
A common guide is around 20% of take-home pay across all goals, but any consistent amount beats an ambitious one abandoned by March. Start where the budget survives.
What comes first: an emergency fund or investing?
For most people, a starter emergency fund (about one month of costs), then expensive debt, then a fuller fund of three to six months, then investing.
Does inflation matter in a savings plan?
Yes. If prices rise faster than your rate, the balance grows while its buying power shrinks. The projection here is in nominal terms; keep that discount in mind for long goals.
