Portfolio Insight: "DCA" (Dollar Cost Averaging) helps lower your average buy price during market dips, reducing the risk of a single entry point.

Buy a share at more than one price and "what did I pay?" stops having an obvious answer. This calculator combines every purchase into the true average price per share, the number every later decision about the position depends on.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter each purchase: the number of shares and the price paid.
  • Press calculate to see total shares, total cost and the average price per share.
  • Add a planned purchase to see how it would move the average before you buy.

Averaging down: tool and trap

Buying more as a price falls lowers your average and your break-even point, and for a sound company that can be smart. For a deteriorating one it doubles exposure to a bad idea. The average here is arithmetic; the judgement about whether the fall is an opportunity or a warning remains yours.

Frequently asked questions

How is average stock price calculated?
Total amount spent divided by total shares bought. Include every purchase; do not average the prices themselves unless the share counts were equal.
Should I include broker fees in the average?
For a true cost basis, yes: add buying fees to the amount spent. It raises the average slightly and makes later profit figures honest.
What break-even does the average give me?
Your average price is the level the share must exceed (after selling costs) for the position to be in profit overall.
