A student loan is signed at eighteen and paid for a decade or more, usually before the borrower has earned anything. This calculator makes the repayment concrete early: the monthly payment, the total interest and the exact month the loan ends.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the total loan balance.
  • Add the interest rate and the repayment term.
  • Press calculate to see the monthly payment, total interest and payoff date.

The interest that accrues before you start

On many student loans, interest builds while you study, and if it is not paid it is added to the balance at graduation, so interest gets charged on interest from day one of repayment. Even small payments during study attack exactly that capitalised amount, which is why they are worth more than they look.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a student loan take to repay?
Standard plans often run 10 years, though terms vary by country and lender. The calculator shows the payoff for the term you enter, and what a shorter one would demand monthly.
Should I repay the student loan early or invest?
Compare the loan's rate with realistic after-tax investment returns, and keep an emergency fund first. High-rate loans usually win the argument for early repayment.
What if I cannot afford the payment after graduating?
Many systems offer income-based plans, pauses or refinancing. Contact the lender early; options shrink once payments are missed.
