Tax Insight: Your Effective Rate is the actual percentage you pay on total income, which is always lower than your Marginal Rate due to progressive brackets.

Tax brackets cause more confusion than any other part of the tax system, mostly through one myth: that earning more can leave you worse off. This calculator places your income in its brackets, shows the tax taken at each step, and reports both your marginal and effective rates.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter your taxable income.
  • Enter (or confirm) the brackets for your country and status.
  • Press calculate to see the tax per bracket, the total and both rates.

Marginal is the slice, effective is the whole

Your marginal rate taxes only the top slice of income. Your effective rate, total tax divided by total income, is the number that describes your actual burden and is always lower. Negotiations, overtime and raises should be judged after marginal tax, never by the fear that the whole salary gets taxed at the new rate.

Frequently asked questions

Can a raise make me take home less?
Under a normal bracket system, no. Only the income above the threshold pays the higher rate; the rest keeps its old rates.
What income figure do brackets apply to?
Taxable income, after allowances and deductions, not gross pay. Reduce your income by those first for the correct bracket position.
Do brackets change?
Thresholds are often adjusted yearly for inflation, and governments sometimes change rates themselves. Use the current year's table for your country.
