Split evenly, or split honestly?
Even splits are fast and friendly when everyone ordered alike. When one person had water and a salad and another had steak and wine, splitting by each person's own items plus their share of the tip is fairer, and nobody quietly resents the next invitation. Decide which kind of group you are before the bill arrives.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
Customs vary widely by country: in much of the US 15 to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard; in many other countries service is included or rounding up suffices. Follow the local norm where you are.
Is the tip calculated on the tax too?
Conventionally the tip is based on the pre-tax amount, though many people simply tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small on ordinary bills.
How do I split when people pay separately?
Each person adds the tip percentage to their own items. Using the same percentage keeps it consistent and quick.
